The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. Because these two types of illnesses have similar flu-like symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone.
In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu
What is the Flu?
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and at times can lead to death. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccination each year. Flu shots are now available at all of our three Sutter Express Care clinics.
What is the cost of the seasonal flu vaccine?
The price of the flu vaccine at Sutter Express Care is just $25. Most insurance plans cover the cost. See if your insurance plan is one of the many we accept. If it is not, you pay the low cost of $25.
Symptoms of Seasonal Flu Include:
- Fever (usually high)
- Headache
- Extreme tiredness
- Dry cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle aches
- Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, also can occur, but are more common in children than adults
What is a Cold?
Scratchy throat and runny nose are usually the first signs of a cold, probably the most common illness known. It is usually mild, with symptoms lasting one or two weeks.
Symptoms of the Common Cold Include:
- Mucus buildup in your nose
- Difficulty breathing through your nose
- Swelling of your sinuses
- Sneezing
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Headache.
Tips for Avoiding the Flu and Cold:
- Eat a healthy, well balance diet
- Drink plenty of liquids and get enough sleep
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for a full 20 seconds
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
- If you are sick, stay home and avoid passing germs on to others
