Dr. Thom Atkins

Medical Director, Sutter Express Care

Thomas Atkins, M.D., is a practicing physician and medical director of Sutter Express Care in Sacramento, Calif. He also serves as president and CEO of Sutter Delta Medical Group in Antioch, Calif. and is the electronic medical record physician champion for Sutter Medical Group in Sacramento.

Dr. Atkins joined the Sacramento Sierra Medical Group in 1985, which in 1992 became Sutter Medical Group, which is affiliated with the Sutter Health network of hospitals, physicians and other health care service providers. From 1995 to 2000, he served as chief medical officer/operations for Sutter Medical Foundation. Well respected within the field, he has had articles featured in medical practice publications. He is a member of both the CMA and the American Academy of Family Physicians and is a Fellow of the American College of Physician Executives and of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

In 1976, Dr. Atkins received his doctorate of medicine, with high distinction, from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha. Following residency in family practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Deaconess Hospital, where he was chief resident, Dr. Atkins entered the Air Force and practiced at Beale Air Force Base. There, he was chief of family practice. He entered private practice in Sacramento in 1982.

Dr. Atkins was born and raised in Nebraska.
